Artificial intelligence (AI) is not new and has evolved for last several decades. However, in the power electronics world it is gaining momentum now and is advancing rapidly in modern power electronic systems (PES). It is providing very powerful tools for design, simulation, control, estimation, fault diagnostics, and faulttolerant control of PES, thereby enabling modern smart grid, reliable and safe renewable energy sources (RES), intelligent PES and motor drives and numerous other non-traditional applications. Consequently, the magazine has also increased the coverage of this technology. In the December 2020 issue of IEEE Power Electronics Magazine, Prof. Bimal K. Bose of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, presented fundamental AI techniques with some examples in the article “Artificial Intelligence Techniques: How Can it Solve Problems in Power Electronics?”
