Society News: PELS Townhall Meeting Reflects on Past, Present and Future

March 1, 2022 by Ashok Bindra

At the last traditional Townhall meeting, which was held virtually on 15 December 2021, IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) members celebrated its achievements. Moderated by PELS executive director Mike Kelly, PELS president Liuchen Chang welcomed all and gave a quick overview of the society’s growth in last 35 years, including projections for the future. His talk educated the participants about the worldwide activities of PELS with 208 Chapters in 10 IEEE regions around the world and nearly 2000 volunteers and thousands of reviewers. Thanks to the PELS volunteers, his talk suggested steady growth over the years with 35+ conferences on diverse topics, number of publication products, including the high impact factor IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, education and scholar- ship programs, and growing activities of Young Professionals (YP) and Women-in-Engineering (WiE) committees. In last five years, the journals page count has doubled, Technical Committees (TC) have expanded to include all power electronics professionals, and Education & Digital Media is growing to deliver more webinars, podcasts, and digital presentations to members. Additionally, his presentation revealed that Open Access Journal is indexed by Scopus, Standards and Roadmaps work is progressing nice- ly, EBL-II has been launched, and the Ph.D. school program expanded to include Mexico.
